What is a Clinical Psychologist?

A Clinical Psychologist has completed Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology. Before this they will typically have completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology and relevant work experience.

Clinical Psychologists are trained to work with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds and draw on their knowledge of multiple psychological and therapeutic models to assess and formulate a person's difficulties.

This formulation will then lead to a joint decision between the psychologist and the client as to a course of evidence-based therapy or a different intervention such as parent consultation or the convening of a school meeting.

My qualifications

Following my undergraduate BSc Hons Psychology degree at Bristol University I undertook the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Surrey University. I spent my final year of training on placement in the Child and Family Department of the Tavistock Clinic, London.

During my NHS career I have worked in multidisciplinary teams with children and adolescents and their parents. I have used Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to treat many young people and have been part of family therapy teams. I have a strong interest in using attachment theory in my formulation and also  draw on narrative therapy in my treatment. In my time working within social care I have had a key role in training and supporting foster carers and preparing prospective adopters for welcoming their children into their lives.

My continuing professional development has included;
Being a member of and attending conferences held by the British Psychological Society Faculty for Children and Young People.
Training in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy
Fostering Changes Facilitators Training
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder training at the Michael Rutter Centre for Children and Young People
Facilitator training for Circle of Security Parenting
